it’s a space where locals gather, connections grow, and good food brings people together. Formerly Derek’s Pub, the restaurant was reimagined and reopened in February 2025 by new owners Edgar Gallant, Marco Bonadie, and Rick Howe, who shared one goal: to create a space that feels inviting, approachable, and part of the local community.
Meet the Team Behind the Vision.A former owner of a beloved fish-and-chips restaurant in Ontario, Edgar Gallant returned home, bringing his passion for hospitality to his new hometown of New Maryland. He thought he had retired but when the opportunity to reopen Wetmore Street Bar & Grill came along, he couldn’t resist coming back to do what he loves, creating a welcoming place for people to gather.
Joining him are Marco Bonadie, his son-in-law, and Rick Howe, Marco’s childhood best friend. Marco brings energy, creativity, and a love for connecting with people through food and community. At the same time, Rick keeps things running smoothly with his practical know-how and commitment to making every guest feel at home.
When the opportunity came to take over the space, the team saw potential not just in the building, but in what it could mean for New Maryland. “We wanted to create a bar and grill where everyone feels comfortable,” Edgar explains. “Somewhere you can bring your family, meet friends after work, or enjoy local music or gather for sporting events.”
The transformation has been more than just cosmetic. With a new menu on the way, new energy, and new ideas, such as live music, comedy nights, and community events like Chase the Ace, it will grow into a gathering spot for locals. This new menu will feature everything from hearty pub classics to creative dishes, including the new favourite, blueberry cheesecake pancake.
While still establishing its place in New Maryland, it focuses on becoming a welcoming hub. By concentrating on approachable food, friendly service, and an open, welcoming atmosphere, they will slowly become a go-to spot for locals to gather and enjoy. The owners pride themselves on creating a space that celebrates local talent and fosters a sense of belonging. “We see the same faces coming back week after week,” Edgar shares. “That tells us we’re doing something right. It feels good to know people want to spend their time here.”
The restaurant also provides employment opportunities for residents and its partners with nearby suppliers whenever possible, ensuring that money spent at the bar and grill stays within the local economy.

When it came to finding financial support to bring their vision to life, the team turned to OMISTA Credit Union. “OMISTA went the extra mile for us,” Edgar says. “They helped us secure a guaranteed loan and set up a line of credit to keep things running smoothly. It’s been personal and supportive from the start.”
For Wetmore Street Bar & Grill, working with a local credit union aligns perfectly with their values. “Banking local means keeping your business close to the people who live and work here,” Edgar adds. “That’s the same community we serve every day.”
As Wetmore Street Bar & Grill settles into its first year, the team is already looking toward the future with more events, new menu additions, and even greater community involvement. Their goal is simple: to continue being a place where everyone feels welcome.
“Good food, good people, and good service, that’s what keeps us going,” Edgar says. “We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re just getting started.”
OMISTA Credit Union proudly supports small businesses like Wetmore Street Bar & Grill, whose commitment to community and local success helps make New Brunswick stronger for everyone.
