1. What is Zero liability?
As a MasterCard® credit cardholder, you receive the benefit of Zero Liability in the event of the unauthorized use of your MasterCard® credit card. If someone makes an unauthorized purchase using your card, whether it is in a store, over the telephone, or on the Internet, you will not be held responsible for that purchase, provided:
- Your account is in good standing
- You have exercised reasonable care in safeguarding your card and/or your Personal Identification Number (PIN)
- You have not reported two or more unauthorized events in the past 12 months

2. How soon does MasterCard® detect fraud on my account?
Your MasterCard® account is monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and if we detect unusual or suspicious activity, we will call you to make sure you are the one using the card. In some cases we may block any further activity on your card until we can reach you, because we take the security of your account very seriously.

3. What is MasterCard® SecureCode™?
This free online service makes shopping online more secure by enabling you to choose a private code to protect you against unauthorized card use when you shop online at participating merchants. Similar to entering a PIN at an ATM, you will enter your password for validation before your online purchase is completed. This ensures that your card is only being used by you. Within seconds, you are making a secure, worry-free purchase. To enrol, click on the "Choose My SecureCode™" link on the Account Summary page.

5. What are some simple steps I can follow to protect myself against credit card fraud?
To minimize your chance of becoming a victim of credit card fraud or identity theft, follow the simple steps below:
- Treat your credit cards like cash. Do not leave them unattended.
- Sign the back of new cards as soon as you receive them.
- Shred personal information such as bills, bank statements, and credit card offers before you recycle them.
- If you have a PIN for your MasterCard® credit card, memorize it. Do not write it down or disclose it to anyone, and never leave it in your wallet with your card. When selecting your PIN, do not pick the obvious like your birth date, SIN, or phone number.
- Keep your MasterCard® receipts and check them against your monthly statement to make sure no one else is using your card. Report unauthorized transactions or discrepancies to Credit Union MasterCard® immediately by calling 1-800-LOST-111 (1-800-567-8111).
- Report lost or stolen cards immediately by calling us toll free at
1-800-LOST-111 (1-800-567-8111), or call us collect at null if you are traveling outside of North America. Most fraudulent use of credit cards occurs within hours of the card being lost or stolen.
- Do not provide your MasterCard® card number over the phone or Internet unless you have initiated the contact and you know the company is reputable.
- Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that ask for personal financial information and always ensure you are using a secure website when submitting credit card or other sensitive information through your browser.
- Destroy unwanted cards immediately so no one else can use them.
- Check your credit report frequently so you are aware of any changes or unusual activity. Credit information can be obtained once a year at no charge from Equifax Canada at www.equifax.ca or 1-800-465-7166, or Trans Union Canada at www.tuc.ca or 1-800-663-9980.
