A LIF holds funds locked-in under pension legislation. It is not convertible to any other investment vehicle. At the end of the year the holder turns 80, the remaining funds must be used to purchase a life annuity. As with a RRIF, the same mandatory minimum payments apply.

However, with a LIF there is a maximum payment amount per year to ensure a certain remaining percentage of value at age 80.
