It’s a delicate balance for every investor - and a dilemma in today’s low interest rate environment. So-called “safe” investments like guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) and government bonds just don’t provide the returns they once did.

How do you protect your principal investment while providing yourself with growth potential?

The answer to these contrasting needs may be a segregated - or seg – fund. A segregated fund invests in a basket of investment alternatives (similar to mutual funds), and can offer as much as 100 per cent guarantee on your principal* regardless of the market’s performance.

For example, if you make a deposit of 10,000 and it grows to $20,000 at maturity, 10 years later, you will receive $20,000*.  But if the markets take a turn for the worse and the value of your contract slides to $7,000 at maturity, you still receive your original deposit of $10,000*.

Segregated funds can be an appealing choice if you are retired or nearing retirement.  A segregated fund lets you participate in the historically favourable returns provided by equities while preserving your principal.  Conservative investors will appreciate segregated funds as an alternative to GICs.  Finally, if you have estate planning needs, a segregated fund can help preserve the value of your estate and ensure assets are passed on without the cost and delay often associated with settling an estate.
