Here are some great tips to read over to protect yourself from possible fraud. It is also suggested that you make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it in the future.
- The next time you order cheques it is recommended that you have only the initial for your first name (instead of your first name in full) and your last name printed on them. This way, if someone takes your checkbook, they will be unsure as to whether you sign your cheques with just the initial of your first name or in full; however, your financial institution will be aware of how you regularly sign your cheques.
- When you are writing cheques to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four digits of your credit card number. Your credit card provider will know the remaining digits of the full account number. This way, anyone who may handle your cheque as it passes through processing channels won't have access to your full credit card number.
- It is best to have your work phone number printed on your cheques instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address.
- Never have your SIN (Social Insurance Number) printed on your cheques. This number can always be added if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.
- Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet, the account numbers and the phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. Another great tip is to carry a photocopy of your passport when traveling either in the US or abroad.
Here is some critical information to limit the damage in case your wallet or purse it stolen:
- Always have the toll free numbers and your card numbers on hand so you know whom to call if your credit cards are stolen or lost. Keep that information in a safe and easily accessible place where you can find them. Always try to store this information in a separate area from your wallet or purse. If traveling, keep any important information of this nature in a zip lock bag in your luggage.
- File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc. were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation.
But what is perhaps most important of all:
- Call the two national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Insurance Number (SIN). The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
Important numbers you always need to contact if your wallet, etc. has been stolen
